Everything We Know About Yuri on Ice Season 2

Where We Left Off

Season one of Yuri on Ice premiered in 2016, and with just 12 short episodes, it took the world by storm. At the end of season 1, we see that Yuri and Victor are married, but they plan to both continue their respective careers in competitive figure skating. In a lot of ways, the story is very much a “happily ever after”. The story was wrapped up so perfectly, we almost didn’t need season 2.

This was a perfect ending for the writers who wouldn’t know how the anime would be received by the public. If it bombed, at least the fans would have some sort of conclusion. We’re not in the middle of a cliffhanger. But the complete opposite happened. Yuri on Ice became incredibly popular, winning tons of awards and being recognized as one of the best anime series of all time. It has also been applauded by the LGBTQ community as showing a yaoi romance in such a beautiful way.

Even though the story was wrapped up so well, we still have so much left to go in the world of figure skating competitions. We love Yuri and Victor so much, we want to see what would happen in their careers. On top of that, there is so much that can be done with young “Yurio”- Yuri Plitsetsky, who is just starting his adult skating career. Already in his 20’s, Yuri Katsuki was considering retirement (yikes) so we knew that the story could only go so far. But with so many side characters, there is a lot left to be done in that universe.

Delays, Delays, Delays

To me, it made perfect sense why they decided to do a prequel movie about Victor’s early career called ICE ADOLESCENCE. We heard so many stories about Victor’s legendary career, as well as multiple flashbacks. He is built up on a pedestal so much that we are very curious to know more about that story. The Yuri on Ice movie was originally scheduled to premiere in 2019. Then, they claimed it would happen in 2020.

So let me spill some tea. My personal theory….(And this is JUST a theory) is that they were planning to delay the release of the movie and season 2 until the 2020 Olympics in Japan, followed by the winter Olympics in Beijing, China.

Not many people realize this, but Yuri on Ice was originally created by a production company called MAPPA. Yuri’s home town is based on an area of Japan called Saga Prefecture. When the town used the anime to promote their town, it increased tourism dramatically. You know that Ninja castle in the show? You can visit it in real life! (Not gonna lie. I want to go there.)

In my mind, I believe that timing the second season to go along with the Olympics would have been huge. Japan was already relying on tourist dollars to come into the country during the ceremony, and they poured in millions to get the city ready for foreigners.

But we all know what happened. The Rona just had to ruin everything in 2020. Now, we’re in 2021, and there is still no word on when the new season will come out. Whenever that changes, Anime Aesthetic is going to be here with the updates ASAP.

Is There a Yuri on Ice Manga So We Can Read What Happens Next?

Most anime series start out as manga, novels, or video games. So the audience has the opportunity to read the story and get more insight on what happens next. But that’s not the case here.

There never was a Yuri on Ice manga. A mangaka named Mitsurou Kubo wrote the script, which was choreographed and animated immediately after the story was complete. However, the writer of the anime series created just one short manga chapter called Yuri on Ice!!! Side Story: Welcome to the Madness

Sound familiar? It coincides with that bonus animation we saw of Yurio doing a rock and roll routine. Most people are calling this the Yuri on Ice season 2 teaser, or trailer. But it’s kind of just an animated add-on to go with this storyline.

What to Read in the Meantime

The writer of Yuri on Ice, Mitsurou Kubo, is the author of several other series. One of her most popular manga “Again!!” was all about a High School student who graduates without any friends. Through a freak accident, he’s able to go back in time to the first day of High School and fix his regrets. So he joins the school cheerleading quad.

On Amazon, I keep getting Welcome to the Ballroom suggested when I tried to search for Yuri on Ice. There is also an anime! So if you enjoy figure skating and dancing in general, maybe check that out.
